Pan Head Square Drive Machine Screws at Empire Bolt & Screw

The Pan Head has a flat bearing surface, a flat or gently rounded top, and cylindrical sides.  Imagine the profile of an upside down frying pan and you have the Pan Head.  The Square (or Robertson) Drive was developed in 1908, 30 years before the appearance of the popular Phillip’s drive.  Due to some poor licensing decisions, Mr. Robertson’s Canadian invention did not gain traction in the U.S. until many decades later.  Finally in the 1970’s, American furniture and woodworking industries realized the valuable benefit of the Square Drive’s positive engagement, vastly reducing “cam out” and allowing maximum torque in driving the screw. The Square Drive is today one of the most popular and reliable drive styles available in numerous industries.
