Square Plate Washers provide an exceptionally large bearing surface.  They are routinely specified in anchor bolt applications, as they possess a much larger surface area than comparable round washers.  This increased area creates a solid friction connection between sill plates and anchor bolts, vastly reducing pullout failures.  As such, they are often a required component in seismic applications.  A low carbon steel washer, they are supplied plain finish or hot dipped galvanized.
