A common occurrence in the utilization of washers is the loosening of the washer from its assembly.  This is caused by a variety of forces that may be present within an application, but the most frequently seen failures are due to vibrational forces.  Heavy Split Lock Washers (also known as Heavy Helical Spring Lock Washers) are a popular way in which to counter these forces and prevent assembly failures in high torque applications.  The helical shape of the hardened split ring exerts a spring force between the fastener and the mating surface, which in turn creates friction and resistance to rotation.  Heavy Split Lock Washers have an increased OD and thickness over regular Split Lock Washers, making them an ideal choice in higher strength or higher torque applications.
