Slotted & Castle Nuts at Empire Bolt & Screw

Slotted Hex Nuts have slots cut into the top of the of the hex nut through the centers of all the opposing flats. Slots are cut into the non-bearing surface of the nut.  The slots are used for the insertion of cotter pins or safety wire to secure the nut when used with a drilled-hole shank fastener.  Slotted nuts are available in a variety of sizes, materials, and finishes.

Castle Nuts are similar in function & application to their Slotted Nut cousin, with the noticeable difference of Castle Nuts having a raised, round "turret" on top of the nut's hex.  It is into this turreted, raised portion that the slots are cut, leaving the hex portion of the nut intact.
